Spacing magazine stole my money

On December 10, 2008, I attended the Spacing magazine anniversary party at The Great Hall on Queen St. West in Toronto and, in a fit of jubilance, extended my Spacing magazine subscription by 2 years. I was told that the new subscription would be tacked to the end of my existing subscription which would be ending in 2009.  I drank some wine and all was right with the world.

Then, at the end of my original term came a notice that my subscription was running out.  Oh, a misunderstanding, thought I, and I sent an email reminding them of my renewal. No response.

I called the office and left a message explaining the situation and leaving my phone number. No response.

Oh, thought I, they're likely busy people and I'm sure it's taken care of.

But, by now I should have received the next issue and I am Spacing-less.

Now, $26 isn't a lot of money but it's the principle of the thing.  A magazine preaching social consciousness stole my money.  And won't respond when asked about it.

I still want the issues I paid for but this episode has really altered how I feel about Spacing magazine.

Top Free Windows Mobile Apps

The top two free applications for Windows Mobile at Pocketgear.com are as follows:

Pocket Islam (Touch version) version 9.0 is first and Sexual Positions version 1.0 is in second place.

I don't know where to begin...

I am surprised that Pocket Islam has reached version 9 where Sexual Positions is still at version 1.0. No bugs in Sexual Positions so it didn't require an update? Not enough new positions to justify a version 1.1?

Apparently it's taken a few more versions to get Pocket Islam perfect.

Somehow I would have expected the Sexual Positions to be the Touch Screen version.

Yeah, I'm done now.

Pocketgear.com is a site dedicated to providing software for Windows Mobile, Blackberry Palm OS and Android mobile devices.

I'm a Windows Mobile user and have been longing for an easy way to add a new item to my toodledo lists from my phone without the lengthy process of launching the web browser.

Last week I stumbled across a handy way to do just that using Blade Lane's TwitToday plugin. This plugin allows you to update your twitter status from the today screen. But, you can also use it to send direct messages.

Using this ability and toodledo's twitter connection I can send a quick tweet like:

d toodledo Milk *Groceries

which will add Milk to my groceries list.  Brilliant!

The TwitToday plugin is available here:

I've been using this on my HTC TyTN II running WM6.1

Windows Mobile update

My experiment with Windows Mobile 6.1 continues but I am typing this update on my iPod Touch. Why? To be honest, even though WM is OK as an Operating System, it's dog slow. I realize speed is hardware dependent but I am running the OS on an approved WM device so it should perform.

I like that the WM interface is so configurable; I like that I'm not tied to a specific App store; I like how the OS exposes everything to an enterprising programmer.

But, all the low level access in the world isn't any good if buttons don't react when you click on them or applications take minutes to load or exit.

The iPod keyboard on the iPod is superb. The SPB keyboard on the WM is nice but, again, slow to react. And some of the keys are located oddly for a mobile device. For instance, the / key requires going down two levels.

But, then there's the other side of the coin. I was looking for an app to see the wifi channels in use in the area and all the apps to do it had been removed from the Apple app store. I ended up using an app on the WM.

As much as I like the user experience of using the iPod, I am chafing under the Big Brother-esque feeling of everything everything having to be Apple aproved before I'm allowed to have it.
