Could be ..

The streak in the lower left corner might be a pic of a meteor during the Perseid Meteor shower. Or a plane ... or a satellite ... or someone using a laser pointer. (Who would do that?)

Camping Pictures

Pictures from the wonderful camping trip this past weekend. The personal highlight of the trip for me was the time spent swimming in the lake. I really do miss spending summer vacations just floating about in the wet stuff.

Here they are.

Rochester

Here are some pictures from the TUEM trip to Rochester this past weekend. It was a great trip (busy, of course). I was experimenting with light painting which is when you use a long shutter speeds and then use a flashlight to illuminate certain things in the image. Some images turned out very well. Others were a bit of a disappointment. I'd like to keep experimenting with this technique though.

This is a snap I took with my phone whilst wandering around at Snap. I like it better than some of the ones they were trying to auction off. ;)

Barber Mills

Here are some pics from the Toronto Urban Exploration outing to Barber Mills. It was a wonderful place to shoot. I love the sounds in an old concrete building ... the grit crunching underfoot, the echoing of the voices in other parts of the buildings. It was a grey day which added a hazy aura to everything. Amazing.

New photo model

Meet my new photo model.

His last job might have been in the area of guarding harem's since he seems to be missing some important bits. Like a face. He seems a solid fellow; a hardbody, although I've never seen him work out. He seems youthful though his joints squeak. One important number to do with his physique: 12 inches. Yep, his height. He's definitely the quiet type. The bright lights don't seem to bother him and he'll hold a pose indefinitely until I get the shot. Hopefully, he won't ask for royalties if I sell a picture with him in it...

One of my plants is again flowering

I still don't know what type of plant this is. I got a cutting from a friend when she was pruning hers (most of my plants are castoffs and leftovers).

Here's a pic of the plant showing the leaves. Any help identifying the little fellow would be appreciated.

Change of plans

Originally I was going to do a shoot with a real model but the plans were changed at the last moment. So, ever the improviser, I shot flowers and cats instead. Here's one of the pics from today's adventure.

How a light meter works

This is the total of my understanding of how to use a lightmeter:

There are two basic types of meters: the handheld meter and the meter built into the camera.

Using a handheld meter with the globe is used at the subject. You can use it on the light side or the dark side to see the ratio of light hitting the subject. The globe should be in full light or fully in shadow when doing this. This type of light reading is called taking an incident reading.

The reading given by the handheld meter is of the light hitting the subject and if exposed using this reading assumes the subject is an 18% grey card. So, if the subject is darker you'll have to expose more and if lighter, expose less. Caucasian skintones look best when exposed to match 36% grey so underexpose about a stop from the reading to achieve this.

The other type of light reading one can use is using the meter built into the camera. This type of light reading is called a reflected light reading. The camera meter reads the light reflected from the subject and gives a reading that would result in the subject being exposed to match an 18% grey card. So, if the subject is darker you'll want to underexpose and if lighter you'll want to overexpose.
