Cutting it down
They're cutting down one of the trees along the back of the property which surrounds my apartment building. I was looking at that tree in the past couple of weeks and I knew it was coming. The bark had been worn off the sidewalk side and it was rotting from the inside out. But, it's still sad to see them cut it down. It's even more depressing that they likely won't replace it with a new tree so there will be yet another bald, treeless spot in the city. Less wonderful leaves helping to clean the air. Sad.

yeah it's sad. those trees are susceptible to parasites. i read about the fact that the wooden crates in which americans brought weapons in france, during WWII, infected the sycamores, a beautiful tree that was bordering countryroads and that is now entirely extinct in france.

There's a non-native beetle attacking trees in Toronto too.
I was watching a show a while back about this strange type of seaweed which is starting to take over the Mediteranean Sea. It grew really fast and was choking out everything else in its path (both plant and animal). It turns out it was a seaweed which had been purposely engineered to last a long time in an aquarium. Fish couldn't eat it, it was very hardy. Somehow a small piece had escaped and now is killing everything in its path.

There's a grape vine doing that in a provincial park near Chatham. Someone brought it over from greece or something and planted it in their backyard, which boarders the park. When you look up into the tree's you get the illusion of leafy green tree's but its mostly grape vines, the tree's are dead.

Should we even mention the killer bees which are slowly moving northward which were introduced from Africa or some place?

Poor tree:( Neighbors want us to cut down the big majestic pine in our front yard ... but screw them! (the people, not the tree). (they are worried b/c the tree creates shade in teh winter which allows snow to accumulate a little bit..YOu live in "SKI UTAH!"....get a freakin' 4-WD vehicle and dump you 78 camaro!).
In other news...I notice a lot of shoes on teh roads and streets. If I were to do a "glove" type series of pictures..I would choose shoes. Really, keep your eye out...they are all over the place!
PS: poor tree:(

I'll put the shoe idea to the board at the next meeting. (hopefully without giggling.)
