Life as a teeter-totter

In simple terms, all I want for the new year is balance. Doesn't sound like much, but it's been my resolution for a few years and I still haven't managed to achieve it. And by balance, I don't mean that I want my cheque book to magically sort itself out, rather I want my whole life to sort itself out. I know it's possible to do all the things I want to do and spend time with everyone I want to see and spend time with myself and still manage to get some work done and get enough sleep. I'm sure I've met a person or two in my life who have done this. Unfortunately, I think it usually involves things like 'schedules' and 'discipline' and 'budgets' and other such stuff that I've tried to live without all these years.

Realistically, it comes down to deciding what's really important and focusing on those things. But, what's important? Love, work, learning, feeding the cats, climbing Everest, playing pool, winning a Pulitzer, solving the Rubik's cube, doing the daily Sudoku, scoping chicks, barbecuing the perfect steak, photography, rollerblading, discovering the Cadbury secret. The list is already ponderous and I didn't even mention book club or seeing a movie a week or exercise or the much loved 'staring into space'. Maybe there isn't time to do everything after all. Did I mention eating? I'll have to really peruse the list and see if I can pare things down. That part of the resolution should be done by July or so and then I can start working on those 'schedule' and 'discipline' things.

Then, it will be close to the end of the year and it's time to slow down in preparation for Christmas... I don't suppose it's difficult to understand why it's managed to be my resolution for so long.

I hear ya! Definitely must slow things down a bit this year.

But don't give up on that perfect steak. Some things be done half way. Unless you like your steak medium, of course.

Thanks for approving of my half way ways, I think. ;)
